Bloomberg published an article earlier this week on Nintendo plans to release a new Switch model which would come equipped with a Samsung OLED screen that will consume less battery, and provide higher contrast and maybe even faster response time. It would be a 7-inch panel, 720p resolution and will be able to support “ultra high definition 4K graphics” when paired with televisions.
Known ResetEra user and industry insider NateDrake – who has been linked to various others Nintendo leaks into the past, has now expanded on this story, claiming that the new Switch unit will host a few “select exclusives”, in particular from third party partners.
“There will be some select exclusives, especially from third party partners. Maybe not many of them, but I know of at least one.”
In a separate article, the same source said Nintendo’s plan is to position the device as a review.
“Nintendo’s plans are to position it as a revision. A premium model, if you will.”
If that supposed system comes with a bit of extra grunt, it wouldn’t be surprising to see third-party companies, in particular, wanting to carry more technically demanding titles that the current Switch would likely struggle with. In fact, there are even games on current models that could be used with a much needed performance boost.
As for Nintendo, if you think back to the 3DS era, you’ll know they’ve created a handful of titles exclusive to the New Nintendo 3DS. One of the first was Xenoblade Chronicles 3D, which undoubtedly provided additional sales for the company. So it wouldn’t be a surprise if a Switch review followed a similar pattern.
For now, representatives for Nintendo and Samsung have declined to comment on these latest rumors, and the Nintendo president last month went so far as to say that the Japanese company had no plans to announce a new version of the switch anytime soon.
