As Nintendo does not show much enthusiasm for Star Fox at the moment, we are fortunate to have a small number of independent developers looking to fill the void.
The last to open its wings is Flippfly, the talented team that brought us Race against the sun on Wii U eShop and various other platforms. He is heading towards the last stage of development Whisker Squadron, and has a Kickstarter campaign which is in the process of being funded to help push the project to the best possible level.
As you can see in the trailer below, and indeed in the pitch itself, the Flippfly team are more than happy to own their love for Star Fox and their role as inspiration for the project.
While a campaign has structural similarities to Nintendo’s series, it’s a bit different nonetheless. Each race will go through procedurally generated stages and boss encounters, and there will be roguelike elements alongside the daily challenges and leaderboards. In the fun news for players of all descriptions, it will also be customizable, so that you can make it easier for yourself or go the other way and increase the stake.
As for platforms, the game is slated for mid-2022 and the Switch is mentioned as a target system.
For now, we plan to launch Steam, the Epic Games Store, and hopefully Playstation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch. We will finalize these plans in the coming months and keep you posted!
So there you go, are you hoping to get through that on Switch?
