Tokyo Olympian and world champion Carlos Yulo is looking to tinker with his technique after finishing eighth in the men’s all-around at the 51st FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Liverpool, England on Friday.
“I have to fix my mistakes when I get home,” Yulo said after achieving his goal of a top-eight finish in the all-around. “Other things aren’t bad, although I can say the jump was a positive mistake.”
Yulo’s progress in the event, however, was unmistakable after producing 82,098 in all six tackles. Filipino gymnasts hardly figure prominently in the event.
“I am speechless after the six events, because I [was] fight with myself. It was really difficult. Overall the experience was really good. I’m in the top eight, it’s not bad and it’s still a big achievement for me. I’m happy, but at the same time disappointed,” Yulo said.
He will have a chance to erase that disappointment as he looks for a medal late Saturday night in the floor exercise final and dives into action in the vault and parallel bars finals on Sunday.
Olympic gold medalist Daiki Hashimoto of Japan won the all-around gold (87.198) while Zhang Boheng of China (86.785) and Wataru Tanigawa of Japan (85.231) placed second and third.
15th on vault
Yulo was superb in the floor exercise, the event that catapulted him to world fame in 2019, and also topped the parallel bars with identical scores of 15.166 after finishing sixth in the rings (13.800).
The reigning men’s vault world champion, however, finished 15th in his favorite event among 24 finalists after clocking 14.166, which pales in comparison to his 14.849 in the qualifying round.
“Today I also had fun and I don’t want to get lost in the middle of the competition. But I kind of did, and it’s kind of my fault too. I put more pressure on myself, said Yulo.
