Since the PlayStation 3 generation, updates released on the day a game launches, colloquially referred to as Day One patches or updates, have been the norm. Sometimes they’re small, squashing a few last-minute bugs, but other times they’re massive and almost essential to enjoying the adventure ahead of you.
However, the day one patches are drawing criticism from gamers eager to get in on the action, only to find themselves watching a download bar fill up. Some players with a slower internet connection or limited access can wait hours or even days depending on download speeds. During my trip to cover Final Fantasy XVI, I asked the team about their March achievement in getting gold and what the team was working on now.
To my surprise, developer Creative Business Unit III isn’t working on a day one patch, a reveal that continues to grow rarer with each new release in games. Director Hiroshi Takai gave me a few reasons why.

The first is that the team is confident in its final version of Final Fantasy XVI. The second is that he and producer Naoki Yoshida (and the rest of the CBUIII team) think the game should be ready for launch, acknowledging that not everyone has internet access to download a patch from day one to the light of Final Fantasy Simultaneous worldwide release of XVI. So, at this time, we won’t be uploading a big patch on June 22 when the game releases on PlayStation 5.
However, Takai notes that CBUIII is testing the game daily and looking for bugs, and things might change accordingly, but for now, like it did in the days of the old Final Fantasy, this entry should work entirely as intended.
